This McCabe Made Life

Semper Gumby

There is a saying in the Marine Corps. that keeps coming up for me this week. "Semper Gumby"

Semper Fidelis is, of course, 'Always Faithful,' but have you heard of Semper Gumby? It means 'Always Flexible.'

It's easy, right? Gumby is flexible. Gumby thinks outside the box. Gumby takes our 6-week timeline and stretches it out. "Come on Hezz, be Gumby." I keep saying to myself.

One thing I promised myself when we started on this path towards a tiny home is that I would be honest about the experience. And, in a world of perfect looking Instagram pages, Pinterest, and 'Motivation Mondays' being honest is honestly hard, yo!

That being said, this is where we are at. We are excited about our little home, we are actively downsizing, AND we are slowing it down; which is frustrating. And necessary. And lovely. And frustrating.

Ryan's transfer to a new base starts next week. We had hoped to be out of this house and in our (still nameless) RV. I had expected to find a spot where his commute isn't 3 hours a day. I wanted to be more than what I am today. But that isn't real life.

Real life is balancing an 11-month-old and all the changes that come with our emerging toddler. Real life is the fact that we've sold just enough stuff to be living in piles of little things yet to be gotten rid of. Real life is me getting a stomach bug and Ryan having to use a precious day of leave to take care of our little boy and me. Real life means we only get to play... er... work on the RV in small spurts for the next while. Real life means that we are still in the DEMO phase.

I have to also admit, taking some time to move more slowly is beautiful. This is one of the reasons we are choosing this life. I love watching my men play together. Dreaming up new ways of maximizing the tiny space in our tiny home on wheels brings me a TON of pleasure. It also affords me the opportunity to write and draw and sing to my baby. And that isn't too terrible.
